Home to the only living coral reef in the Continental US and famous sunken ships, Key West scuba diving is without question some of the very best in the world. Here you’ll find vibrantly colored tropical fish, lush coral gardens, fascinating plant life, and intriguing and mysterious shipwrecks. Swim alongside sea turtles and giant grouper, hover over beautiful sponge gardens, observe lobsters and eels, and get up close and personal with a friendly dolphin. There’s a whole world waiting to meet you under the crystal blue, so grab your gear and dive right in!
One of the world’s best dive sites is located right here in Key West! Purposefully sunk in the summer of 2009, this 1944 WWII warship is now the 2nd largest artificial reef in the world. Swim with schools of tropical fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and even a shark or two, as you navigate the ins and outs of this deep sea jungle gym. Perfect for all skill levels, the USS Vandenberg sits 7 miles offshore in 140 feet of water with the top areas of the ship in waters only 40 feet deep. Beginners and seasoned divers alike can venture down into the crystal blue waters and dive this magnificently preserved naval vessel turned reef. It is a dive site you won’t want to miss!
Originally the USS Amesbury, Alexander’s Wreck is a 300 foot Navy Destroyer escort which sank in 1972. While en route to her planned ocean floor destination, to serve as an artificial reef, the vessel grounded in 25 feet of water and was then broken in half by a storm. Lying on her side and with a 150 yard gap between her bow and her stern, the Amesbury has become a welcoming hot spot for an abundance of marine life. Schools of fish gather here and oysters and coral beautifully decorate the entire hull. A popular and easy wreck to dive, Alexander’s Wreck offers not only a fantastic place to observe aquatic life here in the Gulf, but also, a distinct opportunity to explore visible deck guns and a variety of military artifacts, which now call the Gulf their home.
An underwater sea wall with a fantastic drop-off, Ten-Fathom Bar is one of the most dramatic dive sites in Key West. Beginning at 25 feet and dropping quickly to 130 feet, the different depths showcase different species of marine life. The strong Gulf current around the drop off creates superb visibility, so have your waterproof camera ready. You’ll want to photograph the rare black coral and the giant, human-sized barrel sponges. The fish even know this is a popular destination in the Florida Keys, so don’t be surprised if a friendly grouper approaches you for a treat!
